In order to qualify for workers' compensation benefits as a Public Safety Employee must first be employed or have been employed as a Public Safety Employee with a public agency and be injured on the job.
A Public Safety Employee is defined by the California Government Code as:
"The term peace officer means a sheriff, undersheriff, deputy sheriff, marshal, or deputy marshal of a county or city and county, or a marshal or police officer of a city or town, employed and compensated as such operators, …engaged in law enforcement operations, or the protection or preservation of life or property, and not under suspension or otherwise lacking in good standing"
This definition is extended to probation officers and correction officers under the California Penal Code.
